Intermittent fasting with MealPrepPro

We recently made some improvements to cup measurements inside the app, after hearing that this was super important for many of our users. Many people have also written to us over the last 2 years, asking how to do intermittent fasting with MealPrepPro. If you are reading this then chances are you will have the very same question. Long story short, we now support intermittent fasting with MealPrepPro!

Intermittent fasting can be a great way to lose weight. It not only helps you restrict calories, it also boosts your metabolic rate (increasing the calories your body is burning) 🔥

Intermittent Fasting (IF) involves an eating schedule where you switch between periods of eating and not eating on any given day. There is no specific diet for IF. We are simply modifying when to eat, not what to eat. That means that the vast majority of MealPrepPro plans are compatible with intermittent fasting.

Importantly too, you can choose a fasting schedule that suits you. There are different fasting lengths to choose from, but the most common is to eat in an 8 hour daily window and then fast for 16 hours. This is called a 16:8 fast. If you’re not too big on breakfast, you can just start eating later in the day after a long rest overnight. Yet you could modify this for example – if you get hungry in the mornings, you could break your fast early in the day and restart it earlier (beginning your fast in the afternoon).

You also don’t always have to follow the same fasting window. For example, if you are meeting friends in the evening, you might move your eating window to later in the day.


Benefits of intermittent fasting

  • Weight loss – Aside from restricting calories, intermittent fasting increases your metabolism, meaning your body improves in the breakdown of body fat and its use for energy.
  • Brain function 🧠 – Links have been found with increased cognitive performance, increased energy levels, as well as reduced stress, inflammation & chance of stroke. Not only that, a reduced chance of neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimers, Parkinson’s & Huntington’s.
  • Longer life – Fasting may well be helping us to live longer. It is believed our bodies take extra to self-repair in extended periods without food. Perhaps our bodies adapt to the stresses and variability of fasting, much like our ancestors did during times of scarcity of food.
  • Heart health ❤️ – Intermittent fasting may reduce some of the risk factors associated with heart disease, inc. cholesterol & blood pressure.
  • Protect from diabetes – Many studies have found that fasting reduces insulin resistance which in turn helps lower blood sugar levels, particularly for men.
  • Cancer – Intermittent fasting has been shown in some animal studies to help prevent cancer. In addition, IF has been found to reduce some of the strong side effects of chemotherapy.



Using MealPrepPro for intermittent fasting

Intermittent fasting doesn’t necessarily mean you want to have less meals per day. You may prefer to have the same number of meals, but in a smaller eating window. However, people often choose to remove breakfast from their plan and instead get their daily calories from lunch, dinner and a snack. Starting from today, you can now change the number of meals in your plan from the ‘Profile’ tab.




How to track your fasting

We recommend using the app Zero to track your fasting schedule. This is not an app we have developed or are connected with, but it is a fantastic tool for tracking your fasts. The Zero app will notify you when you’ve finished your fast and you can set it to remind you when you need to start your fast.

When we first launched MealPrepPro, we chose weight measurements, over cup measurements. We did this to be as accurate as possible.

After launching, we started to get requests from users for more cup measurements. This made sense because:

  1. Not everyone owns a kitchen scale
  2. Cups can be more convenient

We feel the best meal plan is one you can easily follow. Therefore, we've listened to your feedback and added more cup measurements throughout the app. This ended up being a really big change behind the scenes. The good news is, the changes we've made will be really beneficial for new features we want to add in future, such as changing the number of meals in your plan and offering new macro breakdowns.

We all know the importance of staying hydrated. That’s why for this update we decided to focus on improving the MealPrepPro water tracker.

You can now:

  • Change the measurement units from litres to fluid ounces
  • Sync your hydration data to your Apple Health
  • Change the size of the water bottle and glass
  • Personalize your daily water intake target

Since launching MealPrepPro our Watch app had remained fairly static. That all changes today!

At a glance, you can now:

  1. See your daily meals and mark each one as eaten

  2. See your calories and macros for the day

  3. Track your water intake

  4. Tick off your grocery list

All in all, we’ve found this is a really handy way to follow your meal plan. All your information from your Watch will sync to your iPhone. If you have any problems syncing, simply close and re-open the Watch app.

Coming later in 2019 we’ll be working on adding complications to our Watch app and I’m excited to report back once that’s available.

All New Shopping List For MealPrepPro

Grocery shopping for meal prep just got easy!

The shopping list inside MealPrepPro is a serious time saver. However, we felt that we could make it even more useful. We listened to your feedback and came up with a nicer interface, with lots of handy new functionality. It’s now far simpler to do your shopping for meal prep. Here’s a tour of what we added.

The first thing you’ll notice is a giant “Create new shopping list” button. We wanted to make it immediately obvious what you need to do on this screen. Nothing says simple and tempting better than a giant red button.

While the main aggregated shopping list is brilliant, we wanted to be able to show you which recipes you’ve added to the list and also see where each ingredient comes from. The new navigation at the top makes this easy. You’ll also notice that when you tap in to each recipe you can remove it from the shopping list.

What else do you need for your breakfast casserole? Simply tap on that recipe and see the relevant ingredients.

Finally, you’ll notice a new export button on the top left. This allows you to share your shopping list with your partner or any other kind soul who’s willing to help you with your groceries!

The typical ketogenic diet macro breakdown is 70-75% fat, 20-25% protein and 5% net carbs. The exact amount of fat and protein is a matter of individual body responses and activity levels, so all recipes stay within this range. Keeping you in ketosis for longer! 👌
